Annual Vendimia Golf Open at Bajamar, Aug. 28
Tourney Supports Baja Scholarship Foundation
y Carla White

On Saturday, Aug. 28, Bajamar Oceanfront Hotel & Golf Resort will host the Annual Vendimia Golf Open in Ensenada, Baja California. The shot-gun tournament will begin at 10:30 a.m. at the resort’s 27-hole course, located just an hour south of San Diego and 20 minutes north of the city of Ensenada.

Last year, more than 150 golfers played in the inaugural tournament that was created to both celebrate Baja’s grape harvest season (vendimia) and to provide support for the Baja Scholarship Foundation (BSF), www.bajascholarshipfoundation.org. More than $10,000 was raised to help the BSF send underprivileged Mexican children to school, ranging from kindergarten through college. The BSF, which was founded in 1995, has been rewarded by seeing several of its scholarship students graduate from college in the past year, going on to productive careers and serving as role models in their communities.

Along with Bajamar, AMPI –Rosarito (Mexican Association of Real Estate Professionals, www.ampirosarito.org ) is a returning event sponsor. AMPI works to ensure consistent and ethical real estate practices in Mexico and, under the leadership of current president Ross Buck, the Rosarito branch of the organization guides the tournament and even provides volunteers on event day.

According the Bajamar’s golf pro, Patrick Shaw, the Vendimia Golf Open (not part of the XX Vendimia program) will award a $2000 first prize and other prizes to top golfers. Shaw, who noted that the event will feature wine tasting on a number of holes, has devised a variety of challenges to keep golfers engaged and alert – hole-in-one opportunities, longest drive fairways, and even a longest putt contest. Shaw encouraged participants to register early, and even to check out the hotel’s golf stay-and-play tournament packages. “A little advance practice the day before a big event never hurts!” said the pro.

Registration for the event is $125 per player, which includes cart and greens fees, wine tastings, prize opportunities, a Parillada dinner paired with wine, and more. Awards will be presented at the dinner, but according to tournament committee member Larry French of the Baja Real Estate Group, the biggest prize of all will be the fact that golfers and sponsors are coming together to celebrate Baja California’s grape harvest by raising monies to send deserving children to school.

“We raised the bar very high for ourselves, last year,” said French. “But the quality of the event and of our sponsors make us very confident that this year’s Vendimia Open at Bajamar will be bigger and better, and will ultimately send a lot more kids to school!”
